From answering phones, to distributing marketing material to making airport runs to hosting a faculty member, your help is immeasurable. We invite you to join us and support one of North Carolina’s cultural gems as it celebrates its 40th year in Durham and 84th Season.

Part-time: 15+ hours/week

Schedule Example from 2018 

  • June 3-June 7 10:00am-4:00pm (Hour for lunch)
  • June 10-June 14 10:00am-4:00pm (Hour for lunch; exact hours vary each day this week)
  • June 15-16 10:00am-1:00pm or 1:00pm-4:00pm
  • June 17-July 19 Mon-Fri (This will be to cover times the Special Projects & Admin. Intern is taking class)
  • July 20 (May need help covering reception this day, TBD)

Training would start mid-March/April

  • Would need to come in once a week to train on phones

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Answer multi-line phone system
  • Greet and direct office visitors
  • Sort mail and packages

ADF’s Volunteer receptionist receives:

  • 2 tickets to 2019 Season performances
  • Parking permit for Duke East Campus


*Volunteers for Parkinson’s Movement Initiative will be participating in the class alongside the class members, lending a helping hand or assist when needed or asked for, and generally helping the students have the best experience they can have.  The required volunteer training/refresher course is January 15. There will be FREE snacks!

American Dance Festival is excited to offer Parkinson’s Movement Initiative classes and volunteer trainings in partnership with NC Dance for Parkinson’s and Poe Wellness Solutions and supported by a grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation. Through funds raised by Moving Day® North Carolina, a walk for Parkinson’s, all classes offered through the Parkinson’s Movement Initiative are free for people living with PD and their caregivers.

*Office Assistant (8 hours = 1 ticket voucher)

(Year round, times flexible between 9am-6pm. 2-4 hour shifts.)
Ideal volunteers will be personable, detail-oriented, and modern dance enthusiasts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answer and transfer incoming phone calls.
  • Data entry.
  • Sort and distribute incoming mail.
  • Prepare large mailings.
  • Filing.
  • Check office supplies and report needs to office manager.
  • Assist specific departments as needed.
  • Operate office machines, such as photocopiers and scanners, facsimile machines, voice mail systems and personal computers.


2019 ADF Season (June 13-July 20) (Hours for ticket vouchers may vary between 2-8 hours)


Host a post-performance dinner for visiting dance companies. Nourish our artists and throw a great party on your own or with friends.

Assist ADF staff with special dinners, events, and parties. Volunteers may help with decorations, set-up and break down, sending invitations, food service, and more.

With ADF students and performers representing over 40 countries, we need volunteers fluent in multiple languages to translate at tech rehearsals, in press interviews, for the school office, and more.

PROMOTIONS ASSISTANTS (Late April – early June) (4 hours = 1 ticket voucher)
Distribute promotional materials (season brochures, posters, postcards, etc.) to local merchants, libraries, bars, restaurants, public bulletin boards, and more.

Sell ADF merchandise at theaters before and during intermission of performances. All proceeds support ADF tuition scholarships.

Provide office coverage and serve as point of contact for studio related needs when ADF staff is not available.

ADF brings in over 50 faculty members each summer to teach in our world-renowned school. Please consider hosting (free of charge) a dedicated faculty member this summer for 3 or 6 weeks in June and July.

Pick-up and drop-off faculty, international choreographers, performing artists, and VIPS at the airport and transport them to Duke’s East Campus.

USHERS (Not included in ticket incentive program)
ADF utilizes Durham Convention & Visitor’s Bureau’s Wayfinders to schedule ushers.  If you would like to usher for ADF this season, please use this link to create your account with Wayfinders: http://www.durham-nc.com/about/wayfinders/. Ushers must attend a brief training and scheduling session prior to the start of the festival.
