For over a decade Shen Wei has created timeless dance works that evoke a sense of drama and mystery and immerse audiences in the visually rich world emerging onstage. His stunning company will kick off the 80th anniversary with two beautifully stirring works including Near the Terrace (2000), the work which launched Shen Wei into the international spotlight. The dance, inspired by surrealist Belgian painter Paul Delvaux, is a masterful and stunning progression of slow, simple movements and imagery set to the dynamic music of Arvo Pärt. He will also present the ADF commissioned world premiere of Collective Measures, a rigorous and striking exploration of isolation and structure that investigates the ideas of ethereality and permanence in a place where primal and rational converge.

About  Shen  Wei  Dance  Arts

Shen Wei Dance Arts has been creating dynamic interdisciplinary, cross-cultural performances since its founding at the ADF in 2000. Artistic Director, Shen Wei began his career as a founding member of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, and in 1995 moved to the US to study with Nikolais/Louis Dance Lab. He has received numerous commissions including 12 from the ADF in addition to others from the Lincoln Center Festival, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the New York City Opera, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His company has toured extensively on five continents including Asia, Europe, and the US presenting works that use visual and storytelling elements from the theater, Chinese opera, and traditional and contemporary visual art. The result combines dance with strong scenic elements to create what the Sydney Herald Sun calls “ a fascinating fantasy in movement.”
