Director of Development

Reports To: ADF Director

Position Supervised: Development Associate

Qualifications:  The successful candidate must have: a minimum of five years of nonprofit fundraising experience in an arts or cultural organization; hands on experience with individual giving, major gifts, foundation and government grants, and corporate sponsorships; a proven track record in planning, managing and implementing a comprehensive development program; a record of success in achieving development goals; excellent writing and interpersonal skills; demonstrated working relationships with executives, board members, and volunteers; and experience managing staff.  In addition, knowledge of the Triangle community and experience with capital campaigns is strongly preferred.

Job Summary:  The Director of Development is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program, including individual giving and major gifts, corporate sponsorships, foundation and government grants, special events, and direct mail solicitations.  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement a short- and long-term strategy for securing financial support from a diversified group of funders, including, but not limited to, individuals, foundations, corporations, and government
  • In coordination with Director, work closely with Board of Directors, specifically with the Development Committee, to implement short and long-term strategy.  Assist Director with preparing memos, agendas, board packets, and any other Board of Directors related communications.  Attend all Board meetings and prepare minutes.  Oversee plans relating to location, transportation, food, and other logistic related to Board meetings
  • In coordination with Director, develop and implement a capital campaign as needed.
  • Oversee all aspects of grant writing, including reviewing and editing all proposals/reports prior to Director and regularly reviewing grant calendar to ensure all deadlines are met in a timely fashion
  • Research, cultivate, and recruit major individual gift donors and secure increasing funding from this source
  • Develop and oversee implementation of plans for all solicitations and donor related communications, including composing all relevant text
  • Develop and implement new and existing fundraising/donor activities & events including the Gala
  • Develop and oversee implementation of a donor stewardship plan
  • Identify new sources of funding and research prospects
  • Execute monthly reports documenting development activity level including progress towards meeting targets
  • Assist with organization-wide strategic planning through weekly meetings with leadership team
  • Assist with preparing annual operating and program budgets
  • Represent ADF at governmental meetings and events, including Arts Day
  • Assist in the development of a fundraising plan for ADF alumni
  • Oversee the securing of in-kind donations, and form new relationships with community businesses as needs dictate; ensure each department is kept informed of the status of any in-kind requests
  • Oversee the gathering of data on ADF activities and the creation of a season fact sheet; Work with the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau to prepare an annual report on the economic impact of the Festival
  • Oversee all development-related volunteers and supervise one development summer intern
  • Keep current with best practices in development as well as national and local giving trends
