Auditions & Application Requirements

APPlication deadlines 2019

February 1  Application deadline #1 (early decision)
March 1  Application deadline #2
April 1  Application deadline #3

Applicants are notified of their acceptance into the program 1-2 weeks following a deadline (or a live audition).

AUDITION, personal statement & Instructor Assessment REQUIREMENTS

There is no benefit to attending an ADF audition class live versus submitting a video. All students will be considered equally, and both live classes and video submissions require students to demonstrate modern technique, another dance technique or style of their choice, and creativity and performance (via performance of a 1-minute self-choreographed solo or improvisation).

Live Auditions & Requirements: See next tab for details

All students must attend either a live audition or submit a video dance audition for dance skill level assessment. In addition, all other application steps must be completed, regardless of attending a live audition or submitting a video audition.

dance Audition video Requirements

For students submitting a video dance audition:

  • Technique: For the technique portion, note that you do not need to repeat exercises multiple times. Avoiding unnecessary repetition will allow you to show us more aspects of your dancing!
    • It should include:
      • Up to 2 minutes of modern or contemporary technique, and
      • Up to 2 minutes of any other dance technique or style that you do regularly.
      • When demonstrating each of your selected dance techniques: Remember that each dance technique has different values and skills. Please be sure to demonstrate the physical and artistic values of the specific technique or style you choose. Your dancing should reflect the technique depth, complexity, and range. We encourage you to perform exercises/phrases that feature your ability to move with musicality or rhythmic sensitivity, that show the physical coordination necessary for the technique, and that involve moving in place and through space.
  • Creative work:
    • It should include:
      • 1 minute of improvisation or performance of something you choreographed. This section MUST be self-choreographed or improvised. Performance of another artist’s work is not permitted. Please indicate whether you are improvising or performing your choreography.

All students must submit a personal statement via video submission (regardless of attending a live audition or submitting a video for the dance portion).

  • Please answer each of the following questions in your video: The first priority for us is the we hear your voice and your ideas.
    • What is most exciting to you about dancing and why do you want to come to the Pre-Professional Dance Intensive?
    • What are the three most important personal habits and attitudes that you believe are necessary to create a team that you want to belong to?
    • What’s a goal that you want to accomplish during your time at ADF? Be specific! For instance, instead of saying that you want to become a better dancer, identify what you believe will contribute to making you a better dancer. It could be: working on your ability to improvise; learning from other dancers by watching them in class; taking the risk to dance full out even when you aren’t sure of all the steps; or many, many other things!

How to submit/upload video media files in your application:

  • Upload your video media files within your application when applying online.
  • To upload your video when applying: Click on the + sign and drag/drop your media files or add them from a folder. Once uploaded, you may edit, change or remove any file. The editing feature allows you to title and provide a description for your files.
  • Applicant should be the only person in the video, please do not upload videos of applicant in a class or performance with other dancers.
  • Media upload file restriction: The dance audition media file should contain both your technique and creative work together, however, we will accept up to 2 separate media files for your audition video, and only 1 media file for your personal statement, will be accepted.

A current dance teacher must fill out the Instructor Assessment Form. When applying, you will provide an email for your instructor and they will automatically receive the assessment form. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the assessment is submitted by your instructor for a complete application package. The application will be considered incomplete and will show as Pending when you log into your application until the assessment is completed.
