Choreographer Twyla Tharp’s connection to ADF reaches back over forty years. “My first commission for ADF was in 1969. My company was joined by 66 students to perform Medley on the lawn at Connecticut College. That was Charlie Reinhart’s first year as director. My company has returned over the years to perform and premiere new works at the festival,” she remarks. Her works include eight ADF commissions and reconstructions. In 1990, Ms. Tharp received the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement.
This year, Ms. Tharp returns with an ADF-commissioned world premiere, set on ADF students by longtime Twyla Tharp company members Rika Okamoto and Alex Brady. The piece will be part of the Forces of Dance program at the Durham Performing Arts Center on Friday, July 26th and Saturday, July 27th. For more information, please visit the ADF website.
