Lin Hwai-min, Founder and Artistic Director of the award-winning Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, is the recipient of the 2013 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement. Although he began his career as a writer, after taking a modern dance course at the University of Iowa and studying at the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance, his life’s path was set. “I was inspired by the John F. Kennedy speech when he said, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.’ My country did not have a modern dance company, so I created one.” After founding Cloud Gate in 1973, he subsequently attended ADF as a student in 1978.
Join the ADF community in honoring Mr. Lin tomorrow, Friday, July 26th, at the Durham Performing Arts Center. The award presentation precedes the Forces of Dance program, celebrating the work of Scripps/ADF Award recipients past and present. Cloud Gate Dance Theatre dancer Chou Chang-ning will perform a solo from Lin’s masterpiece Moon Water (1998).
