Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Location: New York City Center
Ticket Price: *$41 each
Date: Friday, December 30, 2011
Time: 8pm

Description

Anointed: Former Ailey company member Christopher L. Huggins makes his first contribution to the repertory with a new piece set to music by Moby and Sean Clements. Huggins is acclaimed for crowd-pleasing dances that rev up dancers and audiences alike with high-speed movement, unexpected patterns and kinetically charged gestures. His latest work is sure to confirm his reputation as a choreographer in great demand.

Home: Rennie Harris, World Premiere
A choreographer who has made waves with his bombastic hip-hop choreography, Mr. Harris worked alongside Judith Jamison and Robert Battle to create the crowd-pleaser Love Stories for the Company in 2004. This year he’ll be choreographing a new work inspired by the stories, poems, and images submitted to the Fight HIV Your Way contest, an initiative of Bristol-Myers Squibb. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will present the premiere of the work on World AIDS Day (December 1) at New York City Center.

Revelations: Using African-American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues--this suite fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. Alvin Ailey said that one of America’s richest treasures was the cultural heritage of the African-American - ”sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful.” This enduring classic is a tribute to that heritage and to Ailey’s genius.

**Please Note: ADF currently has 30 tickets reserved for the Ailey performance at the $26 group rate. If we find that more than 30 tickets are requested, we are able to add more to the order, however, the $26 discounted rate is not guaranteed. ONLY in the event that a student reserves an Ailey ticket and the discounted rate is more than $26, the opportunity to cancel the ticket and receive a refund will be an option.

Description

FOCUS Dance, an exciting week-long celebration showcasing eight dance companies, is a new initiative aimed at promoting American dance to the national and international community. The Joyce partners with Gotham Arts Exchange and the Dance/USA Agents Council for this exciting project that will feature some of the most riveting companies in America today.

Joe Goode Performance Group's innovative form of dance-theater is accessible, personal, and explores unabashed emotional terrain with humor and honesty. Using text, voice, and high velocity movement, JGPG blurs the line between theater and dance to make work that is thoughtful, groundbreaking, and deeply felt. JGPG believes in the power of theater to create a transformational experience. The work touches on social issues—including gender, race and sexuality—with the idea of illuminating and investigating in order to stimulate questions and conversations. And perhaps remind the viewer of his/her own humanity, however flailing or imperfect that might be.

Monica Bill Barnes & Company is a contemporary American dance company under the artistic direction of choreographer Monica Bill Barnes. The company is committed to creating dance that realizes her vision and bringing it to the public through annual performances in New York, touring, artistic residencies and various teaching opportunities. Its mission is to celebrate individuality, humor and the innate theatricality of everyday life.

The mission of Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion is to create an evocative interdisciplinary body of work. Born into Hip hop culture in the late 70s and grounded in Abraham's artistic upbringing in classical cello, piano and visual arts, the movement's goal, is to delve into identity in relation to a personal history. The work intertwines a sensual and provocative vocabulary with a strong emphasis on sound, human behavior and all things visual in an effort to create an avenue for personal investigation. A.I.M is a representation of dancers from various dance disciplines and diverse personal backgrounds. Combined together, these individuals create a social narrative crafted by Abraham's personal movement impulses and varied inspirations.

Kate Weare Company is a New York-based contemporary dance group creating and performing the work of Kate Weare characterized by fierce physicality, thoughtfulness and authenticity.
Weare’s dances explore a contemporary view of intimacy - both stark and tender - by drawing on our most basic urge to move and decode movement. Relationships form a framework for the dances, which in turn suggest that the body’s intelligence is pivotal in our search for intimacy. Weare uses the moving body to explore its innate truth-telling: our need for safety, our longing to connect, our desire to be seen, our irrepressible intelligence about who we are as individuals.
